In August 1971, 21-month-old Melissa Highsmith was abducted from her home in Fort Worth, Texas, by a woman posing as a babysitter. For over five decades, her biological family, law enforcement, and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) tirelessly searched for answers while her mother faced years of painful, false accusations.
Against all odds, a breakthrough came via a commercial 23andMe DNA test. In late 2022, Melissa—who grew up under a different name just miles from where she was taken—was finally reunited with her biological parents and siblings. She has since legally claimed her birth name back.
