On November 7th, 2025 at 9am, Michael Chapel - the subject of In the Land of Lies - will have his evidentiary Habeas Corpus Hearing in Long County, GA. The Hearing will be presided over by the Honorable Judge Karpf and Mike Is represented by attorney Billy Rennie. THIS ONE IS FOR ALL THE MARBLES.
Michael Harold Chapel is a former Gwinnett County Georgia police officer who was convicted in the 1993 murder of 53-year-old Emogene Thompson outside the Gwinnco Muffler Shop on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Sugar Hill, Georgia. His case was investigated in depth through my 10 episode podcast series In the Land of Lies. Physical evidence, documentation, and witness interviews were highly scrutinized and discussed in the series, with new evidence coming to light and new witnesses having stepped forward.
After concluding production of the podcast series, I felt confident in saying that I believe Chapel Is innocent of the murder of Ms. Thompson, and have been an advocate for his release and exoneration since that time. In what may be Michael Chapel's last chance at freedom through the courts, I wish him and the rest of the Chapel family luck during this emotional time.
Look for updates and coverage of the Hearing results soon.
